The Alchemist By Paulo Coelho

the_alchemistPublished in 1988 and released in 65 languages, The Alchemist by Paulo Coelho was the topic of discussion for April’s book club.

The main theme of the book was about finding one’s destiny and the first question asked was did the book move you? Apart from the odd line that made them ponder, the majority of the book club found it philosophical rubbish! Book members did question whether we where the right audience to appreciate this especially when we discovered the quotes from Madonna and Will Smith on the cover!

The book was thought to be too simplistic and written quite childish and very naive. The whole ‘follow your dream’ aspect of the book, irritated most members, in fact we discussed that perhaps not every one has a dream and there is a lot to be said about be happy with your lot.

So the general conclusion to this was that this book was a definite stay well clear of – let’s hope we have more joy with next month’s read!
