The Boy In The Striped Pyjamas By John Boyne

pyjamasAnother small group meeting this month but it didn’t stop us from raving about this book.  One member loved it and polished it off in one setting.  I had read it previously but still enjoyed it the second time round.  I did wonder if the language would grate on people and the fact that it was yet another book told through the eyes of the young boy but this didn’t affect the enjoyment of the book at all.

I loved the fact that although this book is meant for children, it crosses over into adult reading and the fact that we see what a young boy is seeing and can now comment on these matters with the eyes of an adult.

Was he naive to not know what his Father was doing?  Perhaps sheltered would be more suitable.  We even questioned what his Mother really knew of where they were – did she know or had she just learnt to stay quiet.

Either way, the tragic ending pulled on all our heart strings and was definitely considered to be a good read and one of which members wouldn’t have normally picked up.
